Prostate Cancer Screening & NHS Health Checks
Essex Provincial Grand Lodge in conjunction with CHAPS and ACE have come together to provide a programme for all Essex Masons and their friends to have a Prostate Cancer Check and an NHS Health Check.
Prostate cancer is our most common male cancer-causing over 11,000 deaths each year – that’s over one death every hour! Screening programmes in Europe have shown this death rate can be halved using the simple blood test PSA*. So, until we have a similar programme in the UK, we are delighted to provide opportunities to have a PSA test at a minimal charge of £20 at future events within the Province.
All results are reviewed by a specialist and come with advice and a recommendation on when or whether any future tests are required.
Heart disease remains our number one killer. So, at events within the healthcare boundaries covered by Essex County Council, we will also be able to provide additional FREE NHS Health Checks.
This is a vital health check-up for adults aged 40-74 without any of the pre-existing conditions as listed below. It is designed to spot early signs of heart disease, kidney disease, risk of strokes, type 2 diabetes and dementia.
*European Urology, 2014; 65:329-336
NHS Health Checks are for men aged 40-74 and who are not already on treatment for a heart condition, blood pressure or high cholesterol, kidney disease or diabetes, or who have already had an NHS Health Check within the last 5 years. Prostate tests are for men aged 40 plus. Prostate Cancer Screening is strongly recommended for black African and Caribbean men and men with a family history of prostate cancer or breast cancer who are thus at considerably higher risk of prostate cancer. The PSA Prostate Cancer Test costs £20 and the NHS Health Check is FREE.
